ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ offers technical rescue training for individuals seeking hands-on skills in rope rescue, confined space rescue, vertical rescue, and working at heights. These rescue technician training courses prepare participants to recognize hazards, operate rescue systems and assist with technical rescue operations in industrial and workplace environments.

Through Continuing & Workforce Education, students can pursue rope rescue training, confined space rescue training and other specialized rescue certifications through Rescue Training International (RTI). Training takes place at the ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ Safety Training Center, Fire/EMS Technology outdoor rappelling tower and other approved training locations.

Whether you are beginning your rescue training or advancing your existing skills, ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ provides practical, instructor-led training designed for individuals working in industrial safety, emergency response, fire and rescue, and other occupations where technical rescue skills are needed.

Technical rescue involves specialized rescue operations that require advanced equipment, systems and techniques to reach, stabilize and remove people from hazardous or difficult-to-access environments. Unlike routine emergency response, technical rescue may involve complex rope systems, confined spaces, elevated locations or other challenging conditions.Technical rescue operations can include:

  • Rope and high-angle rescue
  • Confined space rescue
  • Vertical rescue
  • Rescue from elevated work areas
  • Industrial rescue operations
  • Working-at-heights rescue
Technical rescue teams rely on specialized equipment, careful planning and coordinated team operations. Training helps rescuers understand rescue systems, identify hazards and safely perform assigned tasks during complex rescue scenarios.

Rope rescue training teaches participants how to work with rope systems used during technical rescue operations. Depending on the course level, students may learn about lowering and haul systems, mechanical advantage systems, anchors, belay systems, patient packaging, rappelling, ascending and descending systems, pickoffs and advanced tension-line systems.

ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ offers Industrial Rope Rescue courses at the Awareness, Operations and Technician levels, as well as a combined 50-hour Industrial Rope Rescue Technician course. The course descriptions include hands-on training with two-rope systems, mechanical advantage systems, tension lines, tripods and A-frame operations.

Confined space rescue training prepares participants to plan and perform rescues in permit-required confined spaces. ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ offers training for horizontal confined space rescue as well as Operations and Technician-level confined space rescue.

Courses address hazard assessment, rescue planning and the execution of confined space rescue operations in horizontal and vertical environments. Advanced technician-level training also includes specialized rope systems and raising and lowering techniques.

Vertical rescue training focuses on rescue operations involving elevated or vertical environments. These skills can be particularly valuable for workers and responders who may encounter hazards associated with towers, industrial structures and other elevated work areas.

ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ also offers working-at-heights training that incorporates rope systems and rescue techniques for suspended workers.

Technical rescue courses may be appropriate for individuals who need specialized rescue skills as part of their current or future work. This can include:

  • Fire and emergency response personnel
  • Industrial rescue team members
  • Safety professionals
  • Oil and gas industry workers
  • Workers who perform jobs at heights
  • Emergency response teams
  • Individuals seeking specialized rescue technician training

Technical rescue training can help participants build skills that may be applicable to industrial rescue, emergency response, safety and other technical rescue roles. Employers may also arrange specialized courses for their teams through ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ.

Participants must meet course-specific requirements. ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ's rescue and working-at-heights courses require students to be at least 18 years old, physically capable of performing assigned tasks using rope systems, comfortable working at heights and able to communicate directly with the instructor. Class sizes are limited to four to 12 candidates.

ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ's technical rescue courses are offered in partnership with Rescue Training International (RTI). Depending on the course, participants can pursue training and certification in industrial rope rescue, confined space rescue, vertical rescue and working at heights.

Industrial Rope Rescue courses are available at different levels, allowing participants to build their skills progressively. ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ also offers a combined 50-hour Industrial Rope Rescue Technician course for students seeking training across multiple levels. Participants who successfully complete applicable training receive certification documentation from RTI.

Certification requirements, prerequisites and course availability vary by program. Review the individual course description or contact ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ Continuing & Workforce Education for current requirements and registration information.

All classes and training exercises take place on the ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ campus, either inside the Safety Training Center indoor rescue training facility, or the State-approved Fire/EMS Technology outdoor rappelling tower and other previously approved locations. Some courses utilize both facilities.

The Instructor of these courses, Dean McCann, is certified by Rescue Training International as a Level 3 Lead Instructor for Industrial Rope Rescue, Vertical Rope Rescue and Confined Space Rescue and has extensive experience in rescue standby, working at heights and training operations in Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana, Indiana, Illinois and Hawaii.

Class sizes are limited to 4-12 candidates, to ensure optimal instructor/candidate ratios, with eight (8) candidates being ideal. This results in increased one-on-one time between the Instructor and candidates in each class, plus allows candidates to work together in required team operations.

Candidates must initially register for training at least one week in advance in order to attend training. Call 432-335-6575 or email Conted@odessa.edu to register with ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ and check if the candidate qualifies for a scholarship.

The candidate will then formally register with Rescue Training International, the organization providing the training certification.

Certificates to be sent to the technician from RTI. Laminated wallet cards for those who successfully complete training will be awarded by the Instructor on the last day of training.

  • Other certification courses, such as Window Washer Technician, Confined Space Horizontal Rescue, and Working at Heights training are offered specifically for your company and your employees, so contact Dean McCann for more needed information.

Rescue and Working at Heights Courses require a minimum of 4 candidates and no more than 12, all of who must meet the following requirements:

  • be 18 years of age or older,
  • weigh between 130-310 pounds,
  • be physically fit sufficient to perform assigned tasks while working from rope systems,
